Energy4All, the UK's leading social enterprise promoting community ownership of renewable energy, is proposing to develop, in partnership with the local community and landowner, a wind energy project on land to the west of Market Harborough.
The project, which is being funded by East Midlands Development Agency (emda), is being developed by Energy4All in conjunction with members of the local community. The aim is to create a new, democratically run co-operative, which will run and own the project. The co-operative will offer the opportunity for members of the public to purchase a stake in the project and so receive an annual share interest payment from net operating profits. The project will also provide a fund for use by the local community on energy efficiency and climate change awareness projects.
Comprising 3 wind turbines with a totally installed capacity of 8MW on part of the former airfield site between Market Harborough, Lubenham and Gartree, the project could provide enough energy to power 4,500 homes.
The project is in the early stages of development and scoping work for the environmental impact assessment is underway. The planning application has been submitted to Harborough District Council. A planning decision is expected to be made in around 16 weeks
Community-owned wind energy projects address a number of issues including the challenge of climate change, energy security and the depletion of fossil fuel reserves, rural and farm diversification and community development. This project is one of 8 new community co-operatives across the region that Energy4All is working towards in partnership with emda...
Energy4All submitted a planning application to Harborough District Council (08/00732/FUL) for a 50m anemometer mast to be erected on the site in order to collect local wind speed and direction data - this has now been approved and installed.
